King George’s Hostel in Westminster

Back on my feet: supporting recovering addicts at Riverside ECHG King George’s Hostel, Westminster

Back on my feet is AP’s work with a group of staff and residents at King George’s in Westminster, a Riverside ECHG hostel. The residents are working to recover from drug and substance misuse, and came together with staff and facilitators from Appreciating People to create new ways of thinking about their lives and the ways they wanted to move forward.

The intentions included:

  • Support hostel residents to develop resilience as they take their next steps, making them less likely to slip back into addiction
  • Set up small communities of peer led support
  • Enable future residents to anchor the newer ones through peer led groups

The project has attracted significant interest in the press, has been recommissioned several times now, and in summer 2012 was shortlisted for the prestigious Andy Ludlow Award, whose judging panel said:

We were very impressed with the powerful and compelling feedback from service users and particularly impressed that this was an approach which enabled and empowered service users to use the tools of AI to assist themselves and sustain their progress.
